Secure Base Philosophy

Doug Osborne and Tony Evans set up Secure Base to deliver Emotional Self-Regulation training to the Fire and Rescue Service who work with adults and young people who set fires.

Emotional Self- Regulation (ESR) means being properly able to regulate ones’ emotions – turn them up or down and express them in a socially appropriate way

Meet the Team


Doug Osborne


Doug is an experienced workshop facilitator, psychotherapist, hypnotherapist and coach. He has been involved in personal development work since 1987.

He has a busy west London clinical hypnosis practice and works on the psychiatric unit at the Priory Hospital London. His clinical training included working with addictive and impulse control issues.  He also works developing pressure management workshops and advanced communication dynamics courses for large corporations and senior executives.

He has delivered over 20 Fire setter advisory trainings in the past three years for both Roehampton University and Secure Base.  He has created and delivered bespoke training for many public sector organisations including the Metropolitan Police, borough councils, county councils and local government, and also a huge variety of private organisations (e.g. Merrill Lynch, ING and Nike).

Doug assisted BMW with their project management of the Olympics in 2012. He has worked with participants across the UK and Europe. He is also a member of the BACP and the British Society of Clinical Hypnotherapists.


Dr Tony Evans


Tony is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist and Programme convenor for two Psychology and Counselling undergraduate programmes at the University of Roehampton in London. He runs a successful private therapy practice in Putney, London and has a background of clinical experience in the prison system and NHS Primary Care.

Tony designed the first Fire Setters course back in 2005, following the demise of the Andrew Muckley course. He has run Firesetter advisor courses for working with young people and adults in excess of 30 times over the past nine years.

He holds a Practitioner Doctorate in Counselling Psychology. He was awarded a distinction in his Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology leading to the award of Chartered Counselling Psychologist status from the British Psychological Society. He is a licenced practitioner with the Health Professions Council. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Tony has been developing short cut processes and techniques within a psychodynamic framework for the past fourteen years in his work with psychotherapy clients, students, supervisees and workshop participants.
